Club Notes
Streete Parish Park Active Retirement Group
Eight members of our group travelled by train to the Radisson Blu Hotel in Sligo last Wednesday to attend the 50 Plus Show. The event is aimed at people enjoying their retirement years, as well as those who don't feel ready to act their age just yet! Now in its second consecutive year, the show featured more than 60 exhibitors offering a wide range of products, services, demonstrations, workshops, and presentations designed to inform, inspire, and entertain retirees.
Our group thoroughly enjoyed the expert talks and live interviews, along with the opportunity to have their photo taken with well-known TV sports personality Marty Morrissey. There was also plenty of practical advice available on health, finance, lifestyle, and leisure, making it an enjoyable and informative day out for everyone.
This was the group's first opportunity to really make use of their free travel passes on public transport, which worked a treat and made the journey both easy and enjoyable. On arrival at Sligo railway station, we were met by a free shuttle bus which ferried us to the beautiful Radisson Blu Hotel.
Along the way, we caught a glimpse of the world's largest replica of a traditional Spanish galleon, which had arrived at Sligo Harbour for a 12-day public visit. The Galeón Andalucía is commemorating the Spaniards who lost their lives when three Armada ships sank in a fierce storm, known locally as the Great Gale of 21 September 1588. The tragedy claimed approximately 1,100 lives off the coast of Sligo.
Our party of eight, now full of knowledge and adventure, made our way home by train to Edgeworthstown, having vowed to make much more use of our long-awaited free travel passes on future group outings.

Community Notices
A Few respectful Words on Behalf of the Community
There are some people who become part of the fabric of a community, and Micky Gettings was one of them. There is hardly a home or farm in our local area where Micky hasn't left his mark. In simpler times, when machinery wasn't as readily available as today, if you needed help, foundations dug, drains cleared, or that all important septic tank sorted when everyone else had given up, you called Micky.
More often than not, he'd find a way to get it working. Micky was a master excavator operator who handled his machine with incredible skill. Watching him at work was something to behold. With a steady hand, an eye for detail, and years of experience, he could make the toughest jobs look easy. It wasn't just his skill that people will remember, Micky never seemed to be in too much of a hurry.
If you stopped for a chat, the machine could wait. Many a quick job turned into an hour's conversation, a story told, a hearty laugh, and a few cups of tea later the machine revved up and the job got done. That's just the way he was. Friendly, generous with his time, and always ready to lend a hand to anyone who needed it.
He was more than a machine driver. He was a great neighbour, a friend to many and one of life's true gentlemen. It wasn’t only his hard work that helped shape our community, but his kindness, good humour, and quiet way with people that left the greatest impression. Micky will be deeply missed and remembered with respect by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. May His Gentle Soul Rest In heavenly Peace.

Community Centre
Parish Park Development
I am delighted to announce that the roadside Planning Permission notice, has finally gone up and the completed development plans of our parish Park have now been successfully submitted to Westmeath County Council for planning approval. This is a momentous milestone in the future development of our community centre.
A tremendous amount of hard work has gone in to putting a tangible future development plan together and one which will leave a lasting legacy for all to enjoy. We hope that approval will be in a timely manner and if any minor hiccups occur it will be overcome quickly in order to progress for funding streams to develop the all-weather pitch. All being well we expect the tender process to begin in the spring of 2027.
This will begin about the promised goal from where we started in Early 2024 and will kick start Phase 1, of the grounds development. We gratefully thank, Westmeath Community Development who were so supportive of the idea and came onboard to offer us a grant to complete a feasibility study and draw up plans to futureproof the development of our community centre to serve our community but also as a hub for sporting events for the wider areas.
New 50/50 Draw
Streete Parish Park Committee are delighted to announce our first winner of our new 50/50 draw. A local winner scooped €500 in our new guaranteed fundraising initiative which will run Biweekly to start off. You can buy as many draw tickets as you want. You can also buy a draw ticket in the usual way at €5 for a draw number or €10 for three draw numbers.
When the draw takes place, whatever amount of money is raised at the time of the draw, will be split 50/50 between the winner and Streete Parish Park. This system gives you a much better chance of winning. All money raised will go directly into the upkeep of our community centre and future development. Our draws will be held regularly, our next draw June 1st. with a minimum win of €500.

Events Note - Streete Vintage Show
Our Vintage Weekend got off to a fantastic start on Friday evening with a social dance in the hall, where the brilliant Ciaran Rosney provided the entertainment. It was wonderful to see such a great crowd in attendance, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the night. On Saturday, we held our annual Vintage Vehicle Road Runs. The cars and tractors each followed separate routes, with a fantastic turnout for both.
A sincere thank you to everyone who took part and to all of our stewards who helped ensure the runs were safe and enjoyable. I would also like to extend a special word of thanks to Connie Kiernan, Coolarty, and Sheridan’s Bar, Kilcogy, for so kindly facilitating the tea stops along both routes. On Sunday, 28th June, the annual Streete Vintage Show returned to Streete Parish Park, County Westmeath, and once again proved to be one of the most successful events ever held at the venue.
The park was filled with an outstanding display of vintage exhibits, including vintage cars, tractors, stationary engines, trucks, motorbikes and many other classic vehicles. This year we were especially proud to celebrate two significant milestones – 80 years of the Ferguson 20 tractor and 60 years of the Toyota Corolla.
The exceptional display of Ferguson 20 tractors was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the day and was greatly admired by enthusiasts and visitors alike. The quality and variety of exhibits on display were a credit to the dedication and enthusiasm of all our exhibitors and supporters. As always, the show was enhanced by the many trade stands, auto jumble vendors and exhibitors who showcased their skills and crafts, creating a vibrant and enjoyable atmosphere throughout the day.
Visitors also enjoyed all of our regular attractions, along with vintage silage cutting demonstrations, which proved to be a fantastic addition to this year’s programme. Another major attraction was the live rescue demonstration by the Fire Service, who carried out a road traffic collision exercise, demonstrating how emergency crews safely cut open a vehicle to rescue a trapped casualty.
It was both educational and impressive to witness. The afternoon was made even more memorable by outstanding musical performances from Declan Nerney and Eiffie Neill, who kept the large crowds entertained throughout the day. We extend our sincere thanks to both artists for helping to create such a wonderful atmosphere. We would also like to express our heartfelt appreciation to all of our sponsors, whose continued support makes this event possible.
In particular, we are extremely grateful to Grange Motors Mullingar, our main sponsors for this year’s show. It was especially fitting that they partnered with us during our celebration of 60 years of the Toyota Corolla. A special word of thanks goes to Paul and his team for their generosity and valued support. As everyone knows, the weather presented us with some significant challenges throughout the day.
Thankfully, almost all of our planned programme went ahead. Unfortunately, our much-anticipated aerobatic flying display had to be cancelled due to the strong winds. Throughout the morning I remained in regular contact with Dave, the pilot, and at 2.00 pm he made the professional decision that conditions were not safe to fly. While this was naturally disappointing for everyone, the safety of both the pilot and the public must always come first, and we fully supported his decision.
Finally, I would like to offer my sincere thanks to everyone who worked so tirelessly behind the scenes. To our committee members, car parking stewards, field marshals, kitchen staff, exhibitors, volunteers and everyone who gave their time and effort before, during and after the event, your commitment and dedication are what continue to make the Streete Vintage Show one of the premier vintage events in the country.
Planning is already well underway for next year’s event, and I am delighted to confirm that the 2027 Streete Vintage Show will take place on Sunday, 27th June. We look forward to welcoming you all back to Streete Parish Park for what promises to be an even bigger and better celebration of our vintage heritage. In the meantime, keep an eye on our social media pages for updates and exciting announcements. Yours sincerely, James Parker Chairman Streete Vintage Club.

Canon Owen will be fondly remembered for his time ministering in our local parish and in Mullahoran. Throughout a long and distinguished life, he served with humility, compassion, and unwavering faith. Canon Owen was not only a devoted priest but also a respected historian, a gifted writer, innovative teacher and wonderful storyteller who preserved the history and heritage of our local communities.
