Streete Active Retirement Group Enjoy Memorable Day Out in Cavan

Members of the Streete Active Retirement Group, enjoyed a memorable outing last Thursday week, taking in two of County Cavan’s hidden treasures with visits to Cavan County Museum and Carraig Gardens.  Despite a few light showers, the weather did little to dampen the group’s enthusiasm as they set off for a day filled with history, hospitality, and friendship. The first stop on the itinerary was Cavan County Museum, where members were treated to a fascinating journey through the county’s rich heritage.

The museum’s impressive collection of exhibits offers a unique insight into local history, from rural life and GAA traditions to the hardships endured during the Famine years. A particular highlight for many was the immersive World War I trench experience, which vividly recreates the conditions faced by soldiers and provides a powerful reminder of the realities of war.

The group expressed sincere appreciation to the museum staff, whose warm welcome and exceptional hospitality helped make the visit so enjoyable. Guests were treated to tea and freshly baked scones before taking part in an informative and engaging guided tour. The

staff’s knowledge and enthusiasm brought the exhibits to life and left a lasting impression on

everyone in attendance. Following the museum visit, the group travelled to The Royal Bar &

Restaurant in Ballyjamesduff, where they enjoyed a delicious lunch.

Members praised the friendly service, excellent food, and outstanding value for money, noting that the staff went above and beyond to ensure everyone was well looked after. The final stop of the day was Carraig Gardens, a beautiful privately owned garden that welcomes visitors by arrangement. The visit proved to be one of the highlights of the excursion.

The carefully designed gardens are home to an impressive variety of plants, shrubs, and flowers, while the imaginative use of recycled and repurposed materials throughout the grounds adds a unique charm and character.  The group paid special tribute to the garden’s owner, Una, whose warmth, and hospitality made the experience even more memorable.

Our group were treated to tea or coffee and a generous selection of delicious homemade baking, creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere that felt more like visiting friends than a tourist attraction. Members agreed that Carraig Gardens is a hidden gem and a must-visit destination for gardening enthusiasts and anyone seeking a peaceful escape in the heart of Cavan.

The combination of natural beauty, creativity, and genuine hospitality made it the perfect way to round off the day. Tired but thoroughly satisfied after an enjoyable and eventful outing, the Streete Active Retirement Group returned home already looking forward to their next adventure together. The day served as another reminder of the value of community, friendship, and discovering the many attractions on our own doorstep.

Boherquill Ramblers

Summer arrived on 14 June 2026 for the Ramblers walk along the Royal Canal near Mullingar. The weather was warm and sunny with just a little bit of a cool breeze along the canal during the out-and-back walk west along the Canal. There will be no walk on Sunday 28 June 2026 as Streete Vintage Weekend will be held from Friday 26 June to Sunday

28 June. The Ramblers send their best wishes to all the organisers and trust the weekend will be as successful as in previous years.

The Ramblers greatly appreciate the generous grant from the North Midlands Credit Union Social and Cultural Fund for 2026. It will be put to good use in the coming year.  The Ramblers walked in the rain in Kilbixy on Sunday 07 June 2026 and to prove they wouldn’t be beaten, they enjoyed their post-walk cup of tea in the rain as well. The forest always welcomes the rain of course, with lots of moss on the ground, a covering of lichen on the

tree trunks and several rhododendrons in full bloom beside the trail.

On Sunday 21 June 2026 the Ramblers will visit Newcastle Forest near Ballymahon for a 9km canal, river and forest walk with a shorter option. Cars will meet at 2pm at the car park beside the bridge in the forest.  Visit boherquillramblers.ie.
