Congratulations

Congratulations and well done to all the boys and Girls from all over the county, especially our local Streete, Rathowen competitors who took part in the 2022 community Games events. Community Games have become part of the fabric of Irish society. This being the 50th year of Westmeath Community Games where better to hold the events only on the new all-weather track at the Mullingar Harriers grounds on Sunday 26 June last.

One of the opening ceremony torch bearers who completed a round on the new track was our very own Orlagh Hanratty, Boherquill, representing Streete-Rathowen. An exciting year lay ahead and here are some successful competitors who gave it their best to represent our area. Field – Shot Putt U14 Girls Remy O’Brien and Sinead Smith. Winners going to National Final U8 Art Muireann O’Reilly.  U12-Model Making.

Pia O’Brien and Frankie Smyth. U14-Model Making. Timotei Deacs. Chairperson Emily Wallace paid tribute to all Westmeath competitors, parents and volunteers, “It has been a hectic few weeks for the county and area committees The aim in Westmeath Community Games is to have as many children in the county as possible to have the opportunity to take part and represent their area and hopefully County. Children all over Westmeath have big dreams, and just being here and having fun is our main aim, it’s not at all about winning – it’s about making memories and making friends. We wish all our competitors and families well as they prepare for regional and national finals. Go neirigh leo.”

Boherquill Ramblers

When the Ramblers visited Kilpatrick Wood beside Lough Owel in November 2021 they were the only people there but the scene was very different on 14 August 2022. The car park was full and there were many families enjoying the cooler air of the fringes of the wood with some venturing into the water. Frances and Charlie Nolan led the walk and Charlie passed on some of his wide knowledge of stocking the fish in the Lough. He even gave a song when encouraged so thank you to the Nolans and especially to Charlie for both education and entertainment.

On Sunday 28 August 2022 the Ramblers will walk at Ballynafid.  Cars will leave Boherquill at 1.30pm and meet at 2pm in the new car park on the side road signed for Ballinafid Lake on the N4 opposite the Multyfarnham turn-off (The Covert). Boots are advised for this boardwalk and forest trail walk.
If you would like to add a walk, new or old, to this year's Walks Calendar please contact Philip Epps.

Volunteers Needed

We are grateful to everyone who has offered to help out at our Bingo in the hall on Monday nights, starting back in September. We could do with a few more volunteers to get us up and running and will be in contact as soon as Stephen returns from his honeymoon to work out a rota to suit all. We depend greatly on our Bingo to keep our community centre open.
