SPP Active Retirement Group
Midsummer Day Out.
Streete Active Retirement Group set off from the Parish Park on Tuesday morning last for our midsummer day out. With the weather promised good, light clothing and plenty of water and a bus full of happy people were the only ingredients we required to make this a memorable day away. Our first stop was Enniskillen Castle, where we were met by a long-time friend of mine, Nigel.
I had promised Nigel over the years that one day we would visit Enniskillen Castle. In fact, he reminded us that he has been working at the castle for the same length of time as he has been coming to our Vintage Show – all of 15 years! After our chat with Nigel, he handed us over to Frankie, our personal guide, for a grand tour of the castle and an introduction to the fascinating history of Enniskillen.
The museum tells the story of the town of Enniskillen and its two famous regiments: The Royal Enniskillen Fusiliers and the 5th Royal Enniskillen Dragoon Guards. The museum staff were so welcoming to us we felt like long lost friend, the displays in the old Castle and the Cavalry Stables made for some very interesting history. The lovely staff and friendly atmosphere make this a very worthwhile place to visit for day-trippers and history enthusiasts alike.
With time getting short and hunger setting in, Martina, the Castle Manager, recommended that we go to Dunnes Stores, where there would be enough seating to accommodate our group for an early lunch. The food was first class and very reasonably priced. With the hunger put to rest, we made our way to Omagh and the Ulster American Folk Park. The park was established in 1976 and tells the story of the Irish emigration to North America over two centuries.
It comprises more than 30 buildings, many of them original structures which were carefully moved and restored, representing locations across Ulster and North America. Visitors are taken on a journey through time from the Old World to the New World, including a full-size replica of an emigrant ship representing the Atlantic crossing. The park was originally developed around Mellon House, the birthplace of Thomas Mellon, founding father of the Mellon banking dynasty.
Throughout the site, our group experienced live demonstrations of traditional crafts and skills, including linen weaving, blacksmithing, candle-making and printing, along with bread making and tasting cooked on the open hearth. Our weary group, now well walked and full of history, boarded the bus for the return journey home to Streete.
We stopped along the way for a first-class, full-course dinner at the Meadow View in Cavan Town. What more can I say? A really enjoyable day out was had by all and our eggar beavers are looking forward to our next outing. I would like to thank everyone who came along, Raymond Carrigy for the use of his lovely new bus, and our committee for putting together another memorable day away.
