Active Retirement Day Out
It was wonderful to finally get away after such a long time locked up due to Covid, our trip, unfortunately, came at very short notice to our members. The bus had been booked to take another group on a day tour but due to unforeseen circumstances, they could not go. So quick on the heels of the offer of the available bus a trip was organised and within hours a text message was sent out and ten members met up at Streete Parish Park at 8.30 all willing and eager to set off.
Our trip took us to the Military War Museum in Collon Co Louth. This museum is a must-go-to for anyone who has an interest in history. The group were pleasantly surprised to be able to have such a hands-on experience straight away, in holding and finding out how the rifles and various types of ammunition worked. The museum is packed full of uniforms and displays of tanks, jeeps and bunkers are a visual treat for those with an interest in war history.
Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about every aspect of the various wars and passionate about the artefacts in the museum. After some tea, we made our way into Drogheda to St Peter's church where the relic of St Oliver Plunkett following his martyrdom is on display along with the true cross prison cell door. St Peter’s church is a calming, peaceful place to reflect and visit, with the history of St Oliver well written and presented. After some light lunch, we made our way to the Battle of the Boyne visitor's centre where you get a great overview of this pivotal battle in Irish history and what transpired in 1690.
After a walk around the beautiful walled gardens and some tea, while soaking up the beautiful sunshine we made our way out to Laytown beach where some of our group dabbled their toes in the sea after a leisurely stroll along the beach, we sampled some ice-cream before making our way back to the Monastery Inn in Clonard, where we enjoyed a beautiful dinner. We would like to thank Mullingar Gardaí for the use of their bus and community driver Garda Fiona, who offered us the opportunity to have a day out. Our next trip is in the planning.
Community Alert
Gardaí advise that a number of reports are coming in with regards to oil being stolen from people's heating tanks. We ask you to keep an eye on your tank especially if you are after getting a heating oil delivery. This also goes out to farmers who have fuel storage tanks around their homes or farm. Report all concerns immediately. Again we ask everyone to be vigilant and take steps to protect their property. Keep a lookout in your area for anyone loitering around and check in on vulnerable neighbours. Don’t make it easy for the would-be thief and report suspicious activity to Gardaí immediately. Bingo Volunteers Needed
The committee are looking at ways to return our Bingo to the hall on Monday nights as before covid. So with this in mind, we are asking for volunteer help at the parish park. This is usually from 8 Pm until 10.30 Pm and can be worked on a rota to suit all. We depend greatly on our Bingo to keep our community centre open. Our Centre is well managed and run; all we ask is a little help to share some of the burdens. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Call Kevin 087 1375222, James 086 3125876 or Steven 087 6449500
Boherquill Ramblers
The Ramblers took their first bus trip for over two years on Sunday 3 July 2022 when they travelled to Boyle in County Roscommon to walk out from the town to Lough Key Forest Park. The weather was kind as the group left the town centre and after a picnic beside the canal harbour just outside the town the group walked on and entered Lough Key Forest Park through an old stone archway. The trail through the forest had vistas of the surrounding countryside and then views across Lough Key itself before the walkers reached the busy visitor centre where the tea, coffee and ice creams were very welcome.
Thank you to Salmon's Coaches of Castlepollard who supplied the bus and Tess their driver for the day. On Sunday 17 July 2022 the Ramblers will meet in Ballinea for a walk along the Royal Canal. Cars will leave Boherquill at 1.30pm and meet at 2pm in the car park at Ballinea. See boherquillramblers.ie for more information.

New Decade of Centenaries Project in Westmeath
I have invited Oliver Fallon back to the parish once again. Oliver was with us last year and recorded some lovely and interesting stories about the big houses which were aired on RTE television. His new project is called, A Decade of Centenaries. This Film production aims to collect memories of the War of Independence and the Civil War period, that have been handed down within families about these two important times in Irish history and how they were seen and experienced by people in every part of Westmeath. Oliver is keen to meet with interested people and we hope he will attend our next active retirement morning in the parish park. If you would like to get involved contact Oliver at 087 2539010 or call Kevin 087 1375222
