Welcome to Streete Parish Park Walking Club
This magnificent walking track is almost 1 Km in length and has a 1.12 gradient. The track is easy to manage and loops around our beautiful parklands here at our community centre. This user-friendly walking track has become a great meeting place for passersby, or those who enjoy a leisurely walk either early in the morning or late evening.
Walking Is Great for both body and soul and refreshes the mind, especially in this fast passed world we live in today. With so many of us now working from home a brisk 20-minute walk can energize the body and help you focus more positively on life.
Streete Parish Park walking track is open to members all year round and benefits from being ground lit as dusk falls, until 10.30 pm in the winter months.
The walking track has enhanced our community and brought great benefits to the many clubs who use our community centre for both social and physical activity.
The tracks surface is topped with quarry dust and a fine sand mix to make it soft underfoot and suitable for all age groups and abilities to use, especially older members and those less active who are looking for a safe place to start their walking experience or improve their fitness level. The track is very popular with walking enthusiasts, joggers, wheelchair users and people who just want a leisurely stroll in peaceful surroundings.

HISTORY
The drive to develop a walking track at Streete parish park was the brainchild of past committee Chairman Brian Nerney R.I.P who was also the founder of the much-acclaimed Boherquill ramblers walking club. In 2010 Brian saw the potential to develop walking areas around our eleven acres of parkland. With agreement from the committee, Brian sought advice from Westmeath Community Development who supported a feasibility study along with a technical expert who did up plans for the track specifications. The project was costed, and funding options were considered, many local fundraising events were organised to get the project off the ground and all funds raised were considered part of the walking club’s contribution to the project. This funding helped immensely in achieving the completion of the project and has acted as a catalyst to many clubs and community areas around the country today.
UPKEEP
The facility is covered under our community centre public liability insurance in the normal way and its running costs are minimal.
maintenance is undertaken as part of the general park ground upkeep. The ongoing costs of providing the walking track are also very small. The lighting is estimated to cost approximately only €7.50 per day or just under €3000 per year.

SOCIAL IMPACT
The track is used daily by a broad spectrum of people from the local and wider area. People speak about the benefits of having this safe all-weather walking facility in their community outlining the contribution it has made to their levels of physical activity, health, and the opportunity to make social contact. This social impact can be seen when parents stay to walk while their children train or take part
in activities in the centre, allowing parents to exercise, socialise and become more connected to the community.
The looped track enables people of different levels of fitness to walk at their own pace, rest on one of our many memorial benches and re-join a group, very easily. The walking track is a winning combination of freedom, fitness, and enjoyment for everyone and will serve many generations to come.
