Boherquill Ramblers

The Ramblers enjoyed the best weather of the year so far on Sunday 21 April 2024 when they joined the many others who had been tempted to visit Mullaghmeen Forest. Coillte’s new policy of encouraging bio-diversity in its forests meant that the undergrowth and quite a few trees had been removed. This allowed the sun to shine in and illuminate the beauty of the large areas of bluebells throughout the forest.

On Sunday 5 May 2024 the Ramblers will visit Newcastle Forest near Ballymahon for a 9km canal, river and forest walk with a shorter option. Cars will meet at 2pm at the car park beside the bridge in the forest. The Boherquill Ramblers 2024 Walking Festival will be held on the 10th-12th May. On Friday the 10th there will be an evening walk in Tullynally Castle Gardens.

The highlight of the weekend will be a longer walk on Sunday the 12th. Further details will be in next week’s notes. If you would like to add a walk, new or old, to the Walks Calendar please contact Philip Epps. See boherquillramblers.ie for more information.

Parish Park Development

A very successful meeting was held with Westmeath Community Development last Thursday with the focus on developing the park into the future. Discussed was the prospect of making applications for Leader funding and other funding streams which are about to be launched in the coming weeks and months. To make these applications we will be meeting with all the clubs using both indoor and outdoor facilities, draw up new plans and create a wish list of future development.

We want to hear your views, requests and look at what improvements can be made and what supports are needed for each individual club from now into the future. Top of our list is to bring our playing fields up to a good standard. To do this we need full redevelopment and drainage of the land including sewage system. If we are successful in our application, we will need to come up with match funding. Match funding is a condition by which communities become involved in the project and show a willingness to take ownership of the assets.

In short, we will need to come up with 25% or more of the total grant. To do this we will run many fundraising events in preparation. This project may take one or more years to complete. In this time, we want to make it as fun filled and stress-free as possible. What we need from you is to become involved. You can become involved in as little or as many ways as you desire.

Our overall goal is to make our Community Centre a safe place for people to enjoy and where our young and a little older can be proud of. To find out more call Kevin 087 1375222.

Deepest Sympathies

Our deepest sympathiesare expressed to the Kavanagh family, Ballymore, Granard and extended Nally family, Late of Lismacaffrey on the sad passing of Kathleen Kavanagh, nee Nally who passed to her eternal reward. May her gentle souls rest in peace.

Parish Park

I’m sure you will all agree Streete Parish Park is at the heart of our community. Not only is it important for us to keep it in good repair, it is also important to involve our community in decision making for the betterment of our people young and a little older. Over the past number of years, the committee have been gathering information, and assessing long term sustainable redevelopment of our centre and parkland.

This will contain new multipurpose sports pitches, Landscaping, and a host of new ideas for the betterment of our future generations. Now is an important time for us to look to the future and make use of funding streams available. The centre itself is now in need of vital repairs and land drainage: To do this we are currently looking at ways to improve these fantastic facilities, which will play an important role in the development of our young people not forgetting anyone who have enjoyed using the centre and will continue into their golden years.

To do this we are presently brainstorming ideas and fundraising events. We invite you to come along on Tuesday Night at 9 pm where you can listen to what’s proposed, show your support, and take part in some exciting up and coming events. If you can’t make it and would like to find out more call Michael 087 9901890 Joan 0860755175 or Kevin 087 1375222

Sheep Worrying Season

Gardaí are appealing for dog owners to keep control of their animals after reports of local sheep worrying recently. A local farmer has asked me to convey the message to dog owners in our parish and surrounding areas to keep their pets on a leash and under control and do all in your power to prevent your dogs from roaming and attacking sheep, people need to be responsible and help prevent the mayhem and savagery which happens to defenseless sheep and lambs every year.

I can only imagine how upsetting it must be for farmers to see their animals in pain and suffering for something that could have been avoided if we the dog owners spared a though and took the time to secure our dogs when at work during the day or equally at night. If you see a dog roaming the fields, please alert the farmer or call local Gardaí in Granard 043 6687660 or Mullingar 044 9384000 if you think it is a cause for concern. Please remember between now and June sheep are particularly vulnerable.

Boherquill Ramblers

There were two major events on the Ramblers agenda on Sunday 25 February 2024. First there was the unveiling of a bench in memory of the club’s co-founder and President Brian Nerney at Streete Parish Park by the Club’s other co-founder, his wife Alice, on behalf of members. The Ramblers, the Nerney family and some local residents heard appreciations of Brian’s sterling work for the Club and the Parish from Chairperson Eileen Moreton, and two beautifully appropriate poems were read by members.

Alice herself spoke briefly of the 43 wonderful years of their marriage and Brian’s commitment to the Ramblers and the community. The Ramblers then moved into the Parish Hall for their 2024 AGM. Chairperson Eileen Moreton is succeeded by Alice Nerney. Nini Murray remains as Club Secretary (assisted by Patricia Bruton). Mary McHugh (assisted by Eileen Moreton) remains Treasurer. Deputy Chair Declan Leonard and Frank Higgins remain on the Committee as does PRO Philip Epps.

The second weekend in May was chosen as the Annual Walking Festival as in previous years and a sub-committee was set up to organize the event. Thanks to Kevin Brady and Streete Parish Park for organizing Brian’s Bench installation and their hospitality on the day. On Sunday 10 March 2024 the Ramblers will walk at Derrycassin. Cars will meet at 2pm at Derrycassin for a 7km forest walk beside Lough Gowna. If you would like to add a walk, new or old, to the Walks Calendar please contact Philip Epps. "The most difficult question ever asked of me by the Press is how I would I describe Pat Gorman. This question come to me at a very tender moment as we mourn the loss of a dear friend pat. To say now he was a legend is an understatement a friend through and through to man woman and child. Sadly From my own personal heart with a tear in my eye, a pure gentlemen is the only word that’s comes to mind. I Could even touch on the word Gentleman."
