Congratulations and well done to all the boys and Girls from all over the county, especially our local Streete, Rathowen competitors who took part in the 2022 community Games events. An exciting year lay ahead and here are some successful competitors who gave it their best to represent our area. Field – Shot Putt U14 Girls Remy O’Brien and Sinead Smith. Winners going to National Final U8 Art Muireann O’Reilly.  U12-Model Making.

Pia O’Brien and Frankie Smyth. U14-Model Making. Timotei Deacs. Chairperson Emily Wallace paid tribute to all Westmeath competitors, parents and volunteers, “It has been a hectic few weeks for the county and area committees The aim in Westmeath Community Games is to have as many children in the county as possible to have the opportunity to take part and represent their area and hopefully County. Children all over Westmeath have big dreams, and just being here and having fun is our main aim, it’s not at all about winning – it’s about making memories and making friends. We wish all our competitors and families well as they prepare for regional and national finals. Go neirigh leo.”

Boherquill Ramblers

When the Ramblers visited Kilpatrick Wood beside Lough Owel in November 2021 they were the only people there but the scene was very different on 14 August 2022. The car park was full and there were many families enjoying the cooler air of the fringes of the wood with some venturing into the water. Frances and Charlie Nolan led the walk and Charlie passed on some of his wide knowledge of stocking the fish in the Lough. He even gave a song when encouraged so thank you to the Nolans and especially to Charlie for both education and entertainment.

On Sunday 28 August 2022 the Ramblers will walk at Ballynafid.  Cars will leave Boherquill at 1.30pm and meet at 2pm in the new car park on the side road signed for Ballinafid Lake on the N4 opposite the Multyfarnham turn-off (The Covert). Boots are advised for this boardwalk and forest trail walk.
If you would like to add a walk, new or old, to this year's Walks Calendar please contact Philip Epps.

Boherhillquill Ramblers

The Ramblers avoided the afternoon showers for their walk in Melkernagh bog near Lismacaffrey on Sunday 22 May 2022. The bog was soft underfoot and the group were surrounded by the sounds of the bog in early summer: birdsong, including a distant cuckoo and closer to hand the roar of a machine cutting turf to add to the rows of sods left out to dry beside the track. The quiet roads outside the bog were lined with wild flowers and in contrast several houses had beautifully cultivated front gardens.
Thank you to Deirdre Leavy and her sister Eilish Beglan who led the walk.

On Sunday 5 June the Ramblers will visit Glasson. Cars will leave Boherquill at 1.30pm and meet at 2pm at the Athlone end of Glasson. See boherquillramblers.ie for more information.

Active Retirement Meeting

Oliver Fallen tells me has had a good response from our drop-in chat morning recently. Oliver is looking forward to coming back to record some interesting stories and memories from people about their childhood. and the stories passed down from your parents and grandparents. For some, this is a great opportunity to leave a little of your memories to be passed on to generations to come. Westmeath County Council through the heritage officer is fully backing this wonderful project. These stories will be archived in a new book of memories which will form part of the library collection and stand the testament of time like the folklore collection back in 1935  This is an ideal opportunity for local schools to become involved in a very interesting step back into history for our younger generation.  I hope other people will join us for the usual cuppa at our next meeting and remember all are welcome; you don’t have to be from the Streete area to join in.

We met up on Sunday 31st July in the Crossroads Inn to hand over the proceeds of €3066 to Evelyn and Enda Neary from Cian's Kennels. This amount was raised at our 100 bird shoot held in our grounds on the 17th of July. The chairman in his few words thanked the sponsors of the shoot. MC Graham Monaghan,Lakelands shooting centre Mullingar, Pat Denning garden services lismacaffrey. He also thanked Wayne Carberry Longford and Terry Adams Westmeath for donating back their winnings to the fund.Seamus Denning for all his work done behind the scenes with the Neary family leading up to the event.

The Kiernan family for their cash donation and the Luke Kiernan perpetual Cup that was awarded to the overall high gun winner. Pauline and Gerry from the Crossroads Inn for their hospitality and refreshments. At this point he handed the mic over to Evelyn Neary who gave a very detailed account of how Cian's Kennels was formed and the work they do.

These words touched the hearts of all present, and it prompted three local business men namely Eugene Fitzpatrick and the Gettings brothers Michael and Andrew to give a substantial cash donation to the fund. Thanks also to other cash donations made on the night. This has now put closure to yet another great charity event carried out by Streete Wildlife club.

Foróige

A Foroige representative has been in contact looking at the possibility of setting up a Foróige club involving the wider local area. Foróige is the leading youth organisation in Ireland and has been working with young people since 1952. The purpose of Foróige is to enable young people to involve themselves consciously and actively in their local area.

Young people elect a committee made up of their peers to run the club. The clubs will normally meet for 1-2 hours per week in the community centre during the school term. The club gets involved in a variety of activities such as sports, drama, dance, indoor games, projects, discos and interclub events. Foróige aims to support the challenges young people face from junior level at 10 to 12 years and in their developing teenage years 12 to 18 years by helping them in thinking for themselves, reflecting on their actions and taking responsibility, building positive and helpful relationships, developing their character and talents, acquiring knowledge and skills for life while improving the community they live in.

I strongly suggest parents embrace the idea as it might be possible to link other local areas and facilities. To discuss the possibility of a meeting please contact Cyril Reilly on 086 0144832 or Kevin on 087 1375222

Streete Wildlife Club

Sunday the 17th of July saw Streete shooting grounds host its annual charity Shoot in aid of Cian's Kennels. 109 shooters took part in what one man referred to it as a "fantastic fair course that all could enjoy with a challenge here and there". I think that sums it up right there.  The club would like to thank everyone for coming out and supporting this amazing charity, and also to congratulate Mostrim man Cian Mcloughlin who was yet again high gun winner with a score of 95/100 for which he received the Luke Kiernan perpetual Cup.

Also congratulations to all the other class winners on the day. Streete Wildlife club would like to thank the following, the committee and club members for all their hard work. To Luke Kiernan's family for coming on board for this charity shoot by donating a cup in honour of one man that was very much involved in all community activities in his day. He would be very privileged to be part of this event. Early signs are that we will be €2k plus, not a bad day's work for a small club.

Boherquill Ramblers

The Ramblers decided not to walk on Sunday 17 July 2022 as the weather was too hot for comfort. There will be no official walks on Sundays 31 July and 7 August 2022 as the Fleadh Ceoil will be on in Mullingar. The town will be closed to traffic and the expected large crowds will cause disruption in the surrounding area. If you're not coming to the Fleadh do get out for a walk in your area if possible. If you would like to add a walk, new or old, to this year's Walks Calendar please contact Philip Epps. See boherquillramblers.ie for more information.

Active Retirement Meeting

We had our drop inn meeting last Wednesday and firstly I’d like to thank all who turned out to listen to some inspirational and inspiring words from Oliver Fallen. Oliver travelled down from Dublin to see and chat with our group. Over the next number of months, he will collect memories and stories from people about their childhood and stories passed down from their parents and grandparents.

Streete Watch community Alert New App

I am currently working with Muintir na Tíre on developing a new easy to use App for our Community Alert Group. When up and working it can be downloaded to your mobile or computer this will phase out WhatsApp and allow more local news features, updates and important contact information such as scam alerts and how to recognise and report to giardia along with a reporting mechanism where you can follow up on a report to see the outcome.

I envisage the app being easy to use and will have up-to-the-minute giardia alert for all areas which would be a big advantage to us because of giardia divisional area changed a few years ago, meaning that our local Granard Gardaí must stay within the county boundary, The new app will allow alerts from Granard, Edgeworthstown, Finea as well as the local Westmeath area. More on this later.

Vintage Show:

Again on behalf of the committee, we would just like to recognise everyone who helped out in any way at our recent vintage show. It is hard to imagine every Sunday since and before our show has been a dry day, but the heavy rain did not dampen the spirits of the crowd who came out to support us and for this, we are really grateful.

A special word of thanks to all who made donations and don’t want to be named. We Thank Westmeath County Council for their kind contribution through the Festival Grant scheme and also a generous grant towards our vintage club, A big thank you to the sponsors of our big Lotto draw on the day. Gettings Brothers Building contractors Lisryan, The Crossroads Inn Lisryan, Durkin Medical, Granard. David Mulligan Auto Repairs Coolamber.

We gratefully thank all who made donations big and small. I just want to assure you without the kind offers of money and help on the day this show is not possible. As we look forward to next year we can only pray the weather is kinder.  Please forgive me for any omissions it’s hard to remember all! Suffice to say a big thank you to one and all.

Active Retirement Meeting

Wednesday 11 to1 Pm: As mentioned last week Oliver Fallen will call to give a chat on Wednesday morning. Oliver was with us last year and recorded some lovely and interesting stories about the big houses in Westmeath, which were aired on RTE television. His new project is called, A Decade of Centenaries and he will fill us in on what's coming up and listen to anyone who has any stories of interest.

I hope you will join us for the usual cuppa and if anyone would like to bake a tart or bring some nice things please feel free. We will also chat about our next trip coming up and what the group would like to get up to come into the back end of the year. And remember all are welcome you don’t have to be from the Streete area to join in.

If you are interested in booking a stall, please phone 089 460 3732 or email: rcd.rathowen@gmail.com Streete Watch community Alert New App: I am currently working with Muintir na Tíre on developing a new easy to use App for our Community Alert Group.

When up and working it can be downloaded to your mobile or computer this will faze out WhatsApp and allow more local news features, updates and important contact information such as scam alerts and how to recognise and report to gardai along with a reporting mechanism where you can follow up on a report to see the outcome.

I envisage the app being easy to use and will have up-to-the-minute gardai alert for all areas which would be a big advantage to us because of gardai divisional area changed a few years ago, meaning that our local Granard Gardai must stay within the county boundary, The new app will allow alerts from Granard, Edgeworthstown, Finnea as well as the local Westmeath area. More on this later.

Active Retirement Day Out

It was wonderful to finally get away after such a long time locked up due to Covid, our trip, unfortunately, came at very short notice to our members. The bus had been booked to take another group on a day tour but due to unforeseen circumstances, they could not go. So quick on the heels of the offer of the available bus a trip was organised and within hours a text message was sent out and ten members met up at Streete Parish Park at 8.30 all willing and eager to set off.

Our trip took us to the Military War Museum in Collon Co Louth.  This museum is a must-go-to for anyone who has an interest in history. The group were pleasantly surprised to be able to have such a hands-on experience straight away, in holding and finding out how the rifles and various types of ammunition worked. The museum is packed full of uniforms and displays of tanks, jeeps and bunkers are a visual treat for those with an interest in war history.

Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about every aspect of the various wars and passionate about the artefacts in the museum. After some tea, we made our way into Drogheda to St Peter's church where the relic of St Oliver Plunkett following his martyrdom is on display along with the true cross prison cell door. St Peter’s church is a calming, peaceful place to reflect and visit, with the history of St Oliver well written and presented. After some light lunch, we made our way to the Battle of the Boyne visitor's centre where you get a great overview of this pivotal battle in Irish history and what transpired in 1690.

After a walk around the beautiful walled gardens and some tea, while soaking up the beautiful sunshine we made our way out to Laytown beach where some of our group dabbled their toes in the sea after a leisurely stroll along the beach, we sampled some ice-cream before making our way back to the Monastery Inn in Clonard, where we enjoyed a beautiful dinner. We would like to thank Mullingar Gardaí for the use of their bus and community driver Garda Fiona, who offered us the opportunity to have a day out. Our next trip is in the planning.

Boherquill Ramblers

The Ramblers took their first bus trip for over two years on Sunday 3 July 2022 when they travelled to Boyle in County Roscommon to walk out from the town to Lough Key Forest Park. The weather was kind as the group left the town centre and after a picnic beside the canal harbour just outside the town the group walked on and entered Lough Key Forest Park through an old stone archway. The trail through the forest had vistas of the surrounding countryside and then views across Lough Key itself before the walkers reached the busy visitor centre where the tea, coffee and ice creams were very welcome.

Thank you to Salmon's Coaches of Castlepollard who supplied the bus and Tess their driver for the day. On Sunday 17 July 2022 the Ramblers will meet in Ballinea for a walk along the Royal Canal. Cars will leave Boherquill at 1.30pm and meet at 2pm in the car park at Ballinea. See boherquillramblers.ie for more information.

Boherquill Ramblers

On Sunday 12 June 2022 Marian Carty led the Ramblers on a walk at Lough Rynn. The loop walk was based on the old estate and passed some of the many cut-stone gate lodges and cottages including a large restored lime kiln, church and beautiful cottage at Farnaught. There was shelter from a couple of showers as the route followed roads through several wooded areas coloured by the rhododendrons in full bloom.

Unfortunately there were also signs of die-back in many ash trees. Thank you to Marian for leading such an interesting and informative walk. There will be no Ramblers walk on Sunday 26 June 2022 as Streete Parish Park's Annual Vintage Show is returning this year after missing two years due to the Covid pandemic. The Ramblers wish the Show Committee all the best and trust the show will be as successful as ever. If you would like to add a walk, new or old, to this year's Walks Calendar please contact Philip Epps. See boherquillramblers.ie for more information.
