On 23 June 2019 the Ramblers visited Newtownforbes, County Longford. Their loop walk through the lush countryside to the south of the town highlighted different aspects of local history. New housing estates in the town gave way to old farmhouses with stone outbuildings. Swifts circled above Lisnabo House which was built around 1815 as a Church of Ireland school and later in the walk the route skirted the old forest of Newtownforbes Demesne.
Back towards the town again there were many large modern houses as the group neared the end of their walk. Thank you to Marita MacNerney and Mary Brady who led the walk.
On Sunday 7 July 2019 the group will visit Lilliput beside Lough Ennell for a 10km road and cross-country walk. The Ramblers trip to Wales over the June Bank Holiday weekend was a great success. On Friday the group checked into their hotels and explored the town of Menai Bridge. On Saturday Liz Gaccon led the group on a walk based on the beautiful village of Beddgelert in Snowdonia. The wonderfully scenic route followed the rocky Aberglaslyn pass beside the Glaslyn river and then a slow climb up Cwm Bychan valley before the descent to Dinas Lake and back to Beddgelert.
Sunday's walk was on Anglesey, through Newborough Forest to Llanddwyn, a tidal island of great historical and geological interest. A stretch of beautiful open beach and some more forest brought the day's walk to an end. Monday's walk was in the north of Anglesey, along the cliffs from near South Stack Lighthouse to the beach at Porth Dyfach. The scenery was breathtaking, and the beautiful weather added to the enjoyment. After their walk the Ramblers only had a short journey to catch the ferry home from Holyhead.
The Ramblers would like to thank Liz Gaccon for all her work in organising the trip and leading such superb walks. Thanks also to Goodsir Coaches of Holyhead and their drivers Graham and Sean for transport over the weekend. The comfortable accommodation and good food provided by the Victoria and Anglesey Hotels and the Premier Inn were all greatly appreciated. The Ramblers 2019 Walking Festival was held over the weekend of 10-12 May, opening with an evening walk in the gardens and grounds of Tullynally Castle during which the owner Thomas Pakenham met the group and recounted the history of some of the magnificent magnolias and other shrubs. The tea and scones in the Tea Shop were a fitting ending to the evening.
On Saturday the group met at the Hotel Castlepollard for tea and scones before their walk in Mullaghmeen Forest. Joe Masterson led the way in the forest, moving among the marked routes in the forest, and including the highest point with its wonderful views including over Lough Sheelin into Cavan. The bluebells were spectacular in the forest, and on a short stretch of road outside, the ditches were full of wild flowers and even a few orchids. There was birdsong in the air all day.
The weather continued mild and bright on Sunday for the longest walk of the weekend, from the Float Bridge near Coole to Fore Abbey, a distance of 24 km. After tea and bites in Jane's Coffee Shop in Fore everyone boarded the bus to the start of the walk. The route of the walk crossed Coolnagun Bog and along a green road to Coolure, past Coolure House and on to the back entrance to Tullynally Castle where there was a stop for lunch in the car park.
After lunch the walk continued through corn fields around Castlepollard and skirted Kinturk Hill before climbing to the ruins of the Viking fort on the summit of Randoon Hill with magnificent views over Lough Lene and much of County Westmeath. There was one final hill to be climbed in Moortown and then it was downhill to the road and right into Fore for a very well-deserved cup of tea back in Jane's Coffee Shop.
The Ramblers have many people to thank for the weekend's success: walk leaders Alice Nerney and Joe Masterson on Friday, Joe again on Saturday and Frank Higgins with John Higgins and members of John's family on Sunday. Thank you to Thomas Pakenham, Octavia and the staff of the castle Tea Shop at Tullynally on Friday. Thanks also to the Hotel Castlepollard for the tea and scones before Saturday's walk and to Jane O'Reilly who provided refreshments for all on Sunday.
The Ramblers President Brian Nerney was always on hand with fruit and water or a lift back to base when required. Thank you to Salmon's Coaches of Castlepollard who provided transport on Sunday. The Festival would not be possible without the cooperation of the many farmers whose land was crossed so special thanks to them.

The Ramblers joined a large group of walkers at Glen School near Edgeworthstown on Sunday 5 May 2019 for a walk in aid of St. Christopher's Services who run services for the intellectually disabled in the midlands. They walked out and back from the school to the bird hide which looks out over Glen Lough which is famous for its variety of bird life. The birds on Lough didn't want to be seen, but there was plenty of birdsong to be heard from the trees and hedgerows during the walk.
On the following day Eamon Carthy of St. Christopher's phoned to thank the Ramblers for their participation and support during a very successful afternoon.
On Sunday 19 May 2019 the Ramblers will visit Sliabh Ban near Strokestown. Cars will leave Boherquill at 1.30pm and meet at 2pm at the yellow building on the left of the N5 just before Strokestown. 'Ward Bros Quarrying and Plant Hire' is on the building. The walk is 9km long and is all on forest tracks so boots should be worn.

The Ramblers were led by Deirdre Leavy on a walk on Sliabh Ban near Strokestown on Sunday 19 May 2019. Although the drive to the car park was uphill there was still a stiff climb up the footpath to the main trail leading to the 1950 Holy Year Cross on the summit. Large areas of forest had been felled, opening up spectacular views southeast over Lough Ree and far beyond Lanesboro at one point while there were similarly impressive views to the north and west later in the walk.
The huge size of the 20 wind turbines on the mountain was undeniable as the group followed the trail from the Cross to the Mass Rock and Ruined Church on the eastern side of the mountain. Thank you to Deirdre for leading the walk.
The Ramblers will visit Wales over the Bank Holiday weekend, so there will be no organised walk on Sunday 2 June 2019.
New members and new walks are always welcome. For details phone Philip at 087 7753612 or Nini at 086 8754411. See boherquillramblers.ie
Streete shooting grounds summer league got underway last Thursday night with over 50 shooters taking part. With scores coming in the high 30s and mid 40s Cavan man Richard O'Rawe finished Top Gun with a good score of 46/50. The league is a 50 bird sporting layout run over eight stands to simulate the all Ireland format, so if your club or County needs practice Streete is the place to be on Thursday nights for the next seven weeks.

Congratulations to local man Sean McNamara sheep chair of ICSA., who organised a very successful protest at the Irish Country Meats plant in Camolin Co. Wexford on Monday last. Sheep farmers from Donegal, Leitrim, Longford, Westmeath, Offaly and Laois rallied together at the crack of dawn, to travel to Wexford where they were joined by their colleagues from the south of Ireland. All farmers were united in anger as they protested at the savage price cuts imposed on hard pressed farmers by the meat factories who slashed the price of lambs by at least twenty euro per head on last year.

On Sunday 28 April the Ramblers walked 14km of the Leafy Loop at Durrow, County Laois, a wonderful mix of woodland, forest and the banks of two rivers, the Nore and the Erkina. The woods presented a beautiful picture with fresh new leaves on the trees and masses of blue bells and white-flowered wild garlic beneath. The weary group finally arrived back in the attractive centre of Durrow for some very welcome refreshments in the Castle Arms Hotel.
Thank you to Salmon's Coaches and their driver Alan Salmon who provided transport for the day. Thanks also to the staff of Abbeyleix Heritage Centre for opening their facilities for the club en route to the start of the walk.

Streete Parish Park Complex had one of the busiest weeks last week due to School holidays. It proves how important this facility is, as we even had youth from the U.K. who travelled here to Streete to compete at different levels of sport both indoors and outdoors. Great credit is due to the complete Parish Park staff as well as some voluntary workers. – A big thank you to all concerned! The Parish Park committee purchased a new special Kubota lawnmower suitable for large areas such as pitches, grounds etc. This machine will help keep the place in pristine condition. Support to our bingo makes this possible, thank you.
Congratulations go to Maura Sullivan who came second in the All Ireland Pickle ball senior ladies doubles competition held in Multyfarnham last weekend. This sport which originally started in America has become a very popular senior sport in Ireland. Well done Maura!

The Longford /Westmeath League and the Basil Sullivan Cup competition are now completed. Congratulations to a very successful Ardagh A team on winning the double. We have finished our own singles competition. On Tuesday night last Pat Purcell and Thomas Sullivan went head to head in the first semi-final with Pat coming out on top. In the other semi-final we had a thrilling match between Sam Donaghy and Mick Turner with Mick winning with his last bowl.
In the ensuing final, Pat raced into an early lead. Despite Mick's best efforts he was unable to catch him. Well done Pat on winning your first trophy with the Streete club! We are now playing the club's doubles competition at the moment and we should be at the semi-final stage by next week. New and lapsed members are always welcome at the club.
