Streete Notes 2nd December 2023
Deepest sympathies: are extended to the Gettings family, Lisryan and Cleggill Longford on the passing of Micky’s Sister-in-law Maura Gettings nee, Doherty. Maura will be sadly missed by her loving husband Seamus, extended family neighbours and a wide circle of friends. Maura and her Husband Seamus have been great supporters of our dog show at our annual vintage show every year from which the Vintage Club express their deepest condolences. May her gentle soul rest in peace.
Christmas Market: and Craft Fair: I was delighted to receive so many calls and texts from well-wishers and people during the week. I have been asked to say thank you to the Ladies, staff and all who helped out to make this a great community event, for some it was a chance to meet up with neighbours and friends not seen since before covid, for others a chance to experience the truly wonderful handmade crafts and culinary delights of the cottage industry and for the children a first chance to meet that very special man in all our lives, Santa. I’m told next year is already in the planning, well done all.
SANTA’S POSTBOX: Great news, Santa ‘was so happy to receive so many requests from his visit last Sunday he insisted that his helper Elves make sure that his Santa post-box is left at the front door of the parish park. In a special magic message to the park committee, Santa said. This is a great opportunity for all our little ones to start of the magic of Christmas, Santa says if the little boys and girls have forgotten something in their letter already sent, they can post a new letter in the special magic Santa post box. Santa has assured us that all letters will be read in time and no child will be left out. Santa will be sending some of his helper elves from the North Pole to Streete Parish Park to collect the children’s letters, wishes and dreams and who knows even mum and dad might get a special present as well. Santa also wants to say a word of thanks to the dedicated staff of the Parish Park who has done a splendid job on putting up the Christmas tree and lights. It makes our community Centre stand out and is a welcome sight for everyone to see.

Streete Notes 15th July 2023
Active Retirement: Our full bus of eager beavers set off on Wednesday morning last for what turned out to be one of the most enjoyable trips in many years. The first stop was the National Museum of Ireland in Castlebar. On arrival, we welcomed a chance to relax and enjoy some lovely refreshments in the museum café, before a warm welcome from Barbra, the museum guide, who gave us the history of Turlough Park, once home of the Fitzgerald family, to whom the estate was granted under the Cromwellian land settlements of the mid-seventeenth century. After viewing the house we spent the morning exploring the wonderful exhibition floors of the museum, which are full of very interesting artefacts with the main focus on Irish folklore and country life throughout the ages. I recommend this museum to anyone looking for a great day out and one of The most interesting museums in Ireland. After working up a hunger we then moved on to our next stop, Ballina, where we enjoyed a beautiful lunch in the Merry Monk pub motel restaurant. The well-known owner, Joe Lavelle made us feel welcome and looked after us with fabulous food, we not only enjoyed the food but the quantity and excellent quality, with full bellies, we headed into Ballina town where the Salmon Festival takes place every year. this is one of the oldest fair days in Ireland. The Festival provides a Step back in time and allowed us to immerse ourselves in what a market town looked like over 100 years ago. The whole town centre was filled with shops and stallholders in traditional dress of the time. The festival celebrates the art of traditional handcrafts and memorabilia of the period, showcasing the skills of bygone years. With live music all day, a Big Ceili Marquee, Social Dancing, Pop Up drama acts, and plenty of traditional cooking on the streets, Time stood still for us with so much to see and do, which made it a day to remember and one we all agreed was worth the visit. Our next drop-in morning will decide our next adventure, but one thing is for sure it will be hard to better this day out, A big thank you to Garda Tom Blake and Mullingar Garda Station for the use of the Community bus, who supported us in making this day possible.
SOCIAL DANCING: A great night of Social Dancing took place in The Parish Park last Friday night to the sound of Sean Brennan. Sean from Lanesborough is one of the most talented artists in country music and old-time waltz. Sean is well-known and respected in music circles and has played alongside some of the big names in country music. He put on a brilliant night of entertainment and we hope to have him back again soon. The next Social Dance is on July 28th with the very popular Unity, so get your dancing shoes shined up for some lively dance and Jiveing.
Vintage Show: Well folks another memorable year of Vintage in Streete is yet again over, and the planning has already begun for 2024. The committee has been in on dated with messages of praise, goodwill and appreciation from all parts of the country. It is truly rewarding to receive calls from as far away as Birmingham, UK and from a lady who was visiting family from the USA, delighted with how well our show is organised, vowing to return next year. It was unfortunate the rain had to spoil the last hour of the show but on the other hand, we were lucky to avoid the heavy falls which hit earlier close by. Fans of our vintage show travelled from the four corners of Ireland and some just to see their favourite legend of country music Johnny Brady who put on his usual fantastic performance. I have to say credit where credit is due to our support act Brid Shaughnassey who is just simply outstanding. Brid is one lady who puts her heart and soul into singing adding a little magic to this year's show. The music was simply wonderful and it was equally as exciting to see so many people out dancing, enjoying themselves and taking part in the Jiving Competition. Our attendance was the highest on record which indicates Streete Vintage Show is firmly on the map of great days out. We are truly grateful to the Vintage car, tractor, machinery owners and trade stalls on the day which numbered approximately 450, from all parts of Ireland North & South including our special guests who came along with the New York Fire Engine. This very engine saw active service in the 911 call out and we are privileged to have it in Streete. Again we are looking forward to next year we ask that you might put the child of Prague out a little earlier and please god the weather will be more in our favour. The committee would sincerely like to thank our next-door neighbour for the use of his field, the local volunteers who acted as stewards in the pouring rain and the many helpers without whom it would not be possible to run such an event. As usual, Monday morning came and the task of cleaning up came, We thank the parish park staff who made sure all was back in order and 100% ready for bingo on Monday night. Please forgive me for any omissions it’s hard to remember all! Suffice to say a big thank you to one and all.
