Active Retirement

A great turnout was had last Thursday morning for our first drop in and chat morning of the year, with lots of topics up for discussion. It was great to have so many happy faces at the table and so many new ideas for the year ahead. Days away are in the planning along with many other social activities, our group is open for anyone over 50 to join so why not give our next monthly meeting a go.

Daffodil Day

Daffodil day and coffee morning is on Friday 22nd of March in Streete Parish Park from 10 am until 2 o’clock. This is a slight change of venue from St James’s, Church. We ask that you please come out to support and contribute to this very worthy cause. We look forward to meeting new and familiar faces for a chat over a cup of tea or coffee along with some beautiful culinary delights. If you can't make the morning, please put an envelope with your donation marked Daffodil day in the Parish Park letterbox and we will gladly forward it to Linda and Janet. Thank you.

New Gym

We are exploring the possibility of offering one or more positions at our new gym to someone, maybe a young person considering a career in personal training or interested in becoming a fitness coach or gym instructor. This is still early days but if we have interest, it might be possible to get funding towards the training course which could open up endless possibilities. We would like to hear from you if are interested, please give me a call to discuss more. 087 1375222.

New Gym

By now some of you will have had a sneak preview of our new Gym facility at the Parish Park. We hope to get it up and running shortly. This will be a great incentive for young and a little older to get and maintain fitness levels. We still have a bit to do to satisfy insurance, health and safety and access to the facility and how to do this without disturbing other events in the main hall. We ask that you bear with us for a month or so. We plan an open day to discuss access and membership, so keep an eye on the notes to stay up to date. Any questions please call me 087 1375222.

Sheep Worrying Season

Gardaí are appealing for dog owners to keep control of their animals after reports of local sheep worrying recently. A local farmer has asked me to convey the message to dog owners in our parish and surrounding areas to keep their pets on a leash and under control and do all in your power to prevent your dogs from roaming and attacking sheep, people need to be responsible and help prevent the mayhem and savagery which happens to defenseless sheep and lambs every year.

I can only imagine how upsetting it must be for farmers to see their animals in pain and suffering for something that could have been avoided if we the dog owners spared a though and took the time to secure our dogs when at work during the day or equally at night. If you see a dog roaming the fields, please alert the farmer or call local Gardaí in Granard 043 6687660 or Mullingar 044 9384000 if you think it is a cause for concern. Please remember between now and June sheep are particularly vulnerable.

Boherquill Ramblers

The Ramblers visited Clondra for a walk beside the Royal Canal on Sunday 3 March 2024. Sunday is a busy time in Clondra, with the boating community well represented by the many boats in the harbor and all the cars parked outside the Richmond Inn with their owners inside enjoying Sunday lunch. The group walked out and back along the canal towpath in pleasant conditions with warm sunshine and a cool breeze reminiscent of a spring day. There will be no walk on Sunday 17 March 2024, St Patrick’s Day. If you would like to add a walk, new or old, to the 2024 Walks Calendar please contact Philip Epps. Boherquill Ramblers

There were two major events on the Ramblers agenda on Sunday 25 February 2024. First there was the unveiling of a bench in memory of the club’s co-founder and President Brian Nerney at Streete Parish Park by the Club’s other co-founder, his wife Alice, on behalf of members. The Ramblers, the Nerney family and some local residents heard appreciations of Brian’s sterling work for the Club and the Parish from Chairperson Eileen Moreton, and two beautifully appropriate poems were read by members.

Alice herself spoke briefly of the 43 wonderful years of their marriage and Brian’s commitment to the Ramblers and the community. The Ramblers then moved into the Parish Hall for their 2024 AGM. Chairperson Eileen Moreton is succeeded by Alice Nerney. Nini Murray remains as Club Secretary (assisted by Patricia Bruton). Mary McHugh (assisted by Eileen Moreton) remains Treasurer. Deputy Chair Declan Leonard and Frank Higgins remain on the Committee as does PRO Philip Epps.

The second weekend in May was chosen as the Annual Walking Festival as in previous years and a sub-committee was set up to organize the event. Thanks to Kevin Brady and Streete Parish Park for organizing Brian’s Bench installation and their hospitality on the day. On Sunday 10 March 2024 the Ramblers will walk at Derrycassin. Cars will meet at 2pm at Derrycassin for a 7km forest walk beside Lough Gowna. If you would like to add a walk, new or old, to the Walks Calendar please contact Philip Epps.
