Death
Having composed these Streete & District notes for over twenty years it is with profound sorrow and regret I include this week the very sudden death of Eugene McGee, Cartron House, Longford and formerly of Aughnacliffe, Co. Longford. Eugene was known for his involvement in sport and his years as Managing Director of the Longford Leader and not forgetting his achievement when he trained and succeeded in bringing the Offaly team to All Ireland Victory.
A man with a great passion for Rural Ireland and so much more. Eugene is survived by his wife, Marian, son Conor and special daughter, Linda, daughter in law, Saoirse, sisters Ita O’Dowd and Evangeline Cummins, his extended family and a wide circle of friends. Eugene’s removal took place last Thursday for Mass in St. Mel’s Cathedral, followed by internment in Colmcille cemetery, Aughnacliffe. May he rest in peace. He will be a great loss to his family and many friends. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a hAnam.
AGM
The A.G.M. of Streete Parish Park & Sports Complex took place in the Community Centre, Streete last Sunday evening and details are not available until next week’s notes in this paper, so keep an eye on these notes in this paper.
Tullynally
Boherquill Ramblers Annual Walking Festival commenced last Friday night with a walk in the grounds and gardens at Tullynally Castle near Castlepollard. Leaders of the walk were club members, Joe Masterson and Alice Nerney. During the walk the ramblers were delighted to meet and be accompanied by the estate owner, Thomas Pakenham, who described many of the rare trees and plants followed by a brief visit to part of the house which was much appreciated by all present, after which we had tea/coffee and lovely scones with cream and jam in Claire’s Tea Rooms.
The following day, Saturday, 11th May we met up at Hotel Castlepollard and after tea, coffee, and scones headed for Europe’s largest planted Beech Forest at Mullaghmeen Forest for a most enjoyable walk complete with a lunch stop and a rest halfway through before returning to Castlepolard and home for many, to be prepared for Sunday’s walk which as always started after Mass in Fore also in Co. Westmeath following tea and treats in Jane’s Coffee Shop. A full report from Ramblers P.R.O. Philip and his wife, Maura later.

Free Local CPR Training
The Irish Heart Foundation have a new programme out called Hands for Life which is free to all interested. The Irish Heart Foundation are endeavouring to teach 1000’s of us some very important Life Saving Skills and how to perform CPR. The course includes:
- Recognising Cardiac Arrest
- Making a 112 call
- Practise CPR
- Recognising Stroke and Heart Attack
- Choking and child CPR and much more..
- This course is free for all interested.
The Course takes place in Streete Parish Park Community Centre on Wednesday, 22nd May. The times are as follows:
- 5.00 p.m.
- 6.30 p.m.
- 8.00 p.m.

Social Dancing
The next Social Dancing night in Streete Parish Park is this Friday, 17th May when music will be supplied by the renowned Bernie Heaney & Boz. A great night’s entertainment is assured with refreshments and free raffle on the night. Dancing from 10.00p.m. to 12.30 a.m.
Launch
The launch of this year’s Vintage Weekend takes place in Murphy’s Crossroads Inn, Lisryan on Saturday, 25th May with music by the ever popular Michael Cahill and our Tractor run earlier on the same day. Registration from 3.00p.m. Funds from the run go in total to local charities. Any prizes for the auction after the run very much appreciated. Boherquill Ramblers
The Ramblers joined a large group of walkers at Glen School near Edgeworthstown on Sunday 5 May 2019 for a walk in aid of St. Christopher's Services who run services for the intellectually disabled in the midlands. They walked out and back from the school to the bird hide which looks out over Glen Lough which is famous for its variety of bird life. The birds on Lough didn't want to be seen, but there was plenty of birdsong to be heard from the trees and hedgerows during the walk.
On the following day Eamon Carthy of St. Christopher's phoned to thank the Ramblers for their participation and support during a very successful afternoon.
On Sunday 19 May 2019 the Ramblers will visit Sliabh Ban near Strokestown. Cars will leave Boherquill at 1.30pm and meet at 2pm at the yellow building on the left of the N5 just before Strokestown. 'Ward Bros Quarrying and Plant Hire' is on the building. The walk is 9km long and is all on forest tracks so boots should be worn.
