Streete Notes 15th July 2023
Deepest sympathies: Are extended to Kevin Gorman, Coolamber, Lismacaffrey, on the sad passing of his dear mother Maggie Gorman. Maggie passed away peacefully on Thursday last. She is predeceased by her beloved husband Michael, her parents, brothers and sisters. Maggie will be sadly missed by her devoted son Kevin, brothers Peter and Johnny, sisters Bridgie, Mena, May, Rosie and Frances, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, her adoring grandchildren Lita and Libby, her two great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, neighbours, cousins and a wide circle of friends. May her gentle soul rest in heavenly peace.
Recent Thunderstorm: I have been made aware and reported that some of our senior personal alarms may not be working due to the recent lightning strikes. This seems to have affected quite a few Senior Alert Monitors in our area. I ask that if you have a monitor you check to see if it's working properly. If you are unsure or need help please call me 087 1375222 and I will do my best to get it back working or replaced ASAP.
Active Retirement: Our full bus of eager beavers set off on Wednesday morning last for what turned out to be one of the most enjoyable trips in many years. The first stop was the National Museum of Ireland in Castlebar, Co, Mayo. On arrival, we welcomed a chance to relax and enjoy some lovely refreshments in the museum café, before a warm welcome from Barbra, the museum guide, who gave us the history of Turlough Park, once home of the Fitzgerald family, to whom the estate was granted under the Cromwellian land settlements of the mid-seventeenth century. After viewing the house we spent the morning exploring the wonderful exhibition floors of the museum, which are full of very interesting artefacts with the main focus on Irish folklore and country life throughout the ages. I recommend this museum to anyone looking for a great day out and one of The most interesting museums in Ireland. After working up a hunger we then moved on to our next stop, Ballina, where we enjoyed a beautiful lunch in the Merry Monk pub motel restaurant. The well-known owner, Joe Lavelle made us feel welcome and looked after us with fabulous food, we not only enjoyed the food but the quantity and excellent quality, with full bellies, we headed into Ballina town where the Salmon Festival takes place every year. this is one of the oldest fair days in Ireland. The Festival provides a Step back in time and allowed us to immerse ourselves in what a market town looked like over 100 years ago. The whole town centre was filled with shops and stallholders in traditional dress of the time. The festival celebrates the art of traditional handcrafts and memorabilia of the period, showcasing the skills of bygone years. With live music all day, a Big Ceili Marquee, Social Dancing, Pop Up drama acts, and plenty of traditional cooking on the streets, Time stood still for us with so much to see and do, which made it a day to remember and one we all agreed was worth the visit. Our next drop-in morning will decide our next adventure, but one thing is for sure it will be hard to better this day out, A big thank you to Garda Tom Blake and Mullingar Garda Station for the use of the Community bus, who supported us in making this day possible.
SOCIAL DANCING: A great night of Social Dancing will take place in The Parish Park on Friday, July 28th with the very popular Unity, so get your dancing shoes shined up for some lively dance and Jiveing.
Deepest sympathies: Are expressed to Dominic Egan and family Kilmore on the sad passing of his brother Eamon Egan, Glanmore, Kenagh, who passed away Peacefully surrounded by his loving family. Eamon is Predeceased by his loving wife Eithna and their infant daughter Mary, his parents Joseph and Winifred Egan, and his brothers Francis and Michael. Deeply regretted by his children Joseph, Fiona, Brian, Edward and Pauline, and his brothers Tom, Castlepollard, Dominic, Streete and Paddy Glanmore, Kenagh. He will be sadly missed by his daughters-in-law and sons-in-law grandchildren. Nieces, nephews, relatives and his many friends and neighbours. May his gentle soul rest in heavenly peace.
Boherquill Ramblers: The Ramblers visited the bird hide overlooking Glen Lough near Edgeworthstown on Sunday 09 July 2023 and the walk became a nature trail for some of the younger members of the group with swans and cygnets on the Lough and moths and wildflowers along the way. The heavy showers of the morning held off for the afternoon allowing everyone to enjoy their walk. On Sunday 23 July the Ramblers will visit Portlick near Glasson. Cars will meet in Ballymahon at 2pm at the petrol station on the Athlone road.If you would like to add a walk, new or old, to this year's Walks Calendar please contact Philip Epps.
